“ Voluntary Groups across the North have united together under one umbrella group to save the threatened red squirrel”

We are very excited to announce the launch of

NORTHERN RED SQUIRRELS is an umbrella group created to unite voluntary groups and individuals working or wishing to work to help save our red squirrels from extinction in the North.

Success is dependent on grassroots effort and our goals will be achieved through effective, co-ordinated joint action among the voluntary groups and individuals, along with cooperation with funded groups.

Voluntary action to save our native red squirrel has been ongoing in the North for many years. Cumbrian groups have been active for over 15 years and Northumberland has seen several groups become established over the past few years, as red squirrel numbers began to decline rapidly due to the influx of grey squirrels.
NORTHERN RED SQUIRRELS is committed to working together to achieve our common goal – the continued and flourishing existence of our much-loved native red squirrel.
Central to efforts is the development of the NORTHERN RED SQUIRRELS website http://www.northernredsquirrels.org.uk/ and the easy-to-use interactive map. This indicates the location and contact details for each volunteer group, enabling anyone wanting to report sightings, get involved practically, request help or information to promptly locate their nearest contact. The idea is to ‘close all the gaps’ and identify a local contact for each area and expand co-ordinated action across the region.
Volunteer action is KEY to saving the red squirrel. Funded groups, such as Red Alert’s Save Our Squirrels and the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership rely on the involvement and co-operation of local volunteers. NORTHERN RED SQUIRRELS are dedicated to working alongside these groups and to also provide a joint voice for volunteers.
NORTHERN RED SQUIRRELS is already providing a platform for voluntary red squirrel conservationists and we invite all groups and individuals to join us to make a difference.
